Winchester Mystery Tour from San Francisco

Winchester Mystery House Tours

Winchester Mystery House Tours

Immerse yourself in the enigma of the world-famous Winchester Mystery House.

The house retains unique touches that reflect Winchester's beliefs and her reported preoccupation with warding off malevolent spirits. The number thirteen and spider web motifs, which she considered to be lucky, reappear around the house. For example, an expensive imported chandelier that originally had 12 candle-holders was altered to accommodate 13 candles, wall clothes hooks are in multiples of 13, and a spider web-patterned Tiffany window contains 13 colored stones.

Tour through 110 of the 160 rooms and look for the bizarre phenomenas that gave the mansion its name. Enjoy seeing a window built into the floor, staircases leading to nowhere, a chimney that rises four floors, doors that open onto blank walls, upside down posts and much more.

Sarah Winchester inherited more than $20 million upon her husband's death. She also received approximately 50 percent ownership of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which gave her an allowance of roughly $1,000 per day (an equivalent of $21,000 a day in present times).

Upon her husband's death in 1881, Sarah Winchester, heir to the enormous Winchester rifle forture, was convinced that her husband's death was a result of the many men and women who were killed with Winchester rifles over the years. Under the advice of her spiritual medium, she was told that unless a room was built for each of the spirits and construction never ceased, the same fate would befall her. Work on the mansion went on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, until her death 38 years later.

Unlike most homes of its era, the Victorian mansion created and built under the supervision of Sarah Winchester has 160 rooms with modern heating and sewer systems, gas lights that operated by a press of a button, three working elevators, and 47 fireplaces. This property, once expanding over 162 acres, spared no expense and contained mostly hand crafted items including rambling roofs, exquisite hand inlaid parquet floors, gold and silver chandeliers and Tiffany art glass windows.
